A quick thank you for sticking around to hear me out, even when I ramble. This newsletter has been a wonderful creative outlet for me. There is something about sending it out into the abyss that I just don’t get from journaling in a book, never to be seen. So thank you for indulging me!
Today I start out with a quote:
“Truth is like poetry, and people fucking hate poetry.”
It comes from The Big Short, a movie about the housing bubble of the mid-2000s. The quote explains the human condition of avoidance. We ignore what is hard, or uncomfortable – what we don’t want to know. And sometimes, with devastating consequences. We’re talking 5 Trillion in pensions, 401k, savings, real estate – gone, poof! 8 million lost their jobs, 6 million lost their homes.
In day to day life, it may mean ignoring several pieces of mail from the CRA and finding out over food truck fare that your accounts have been frozen. It might mean not paying attention to that product you’ve been selling, that you know is totally not making money, but you just don’t want to see how bad it is. Hypotheticals of course ?
Try this: Find a spot, a whiteboard perhaps, something in regular clear view and write the following: Look the truth in the fucking face. If you have kids, you might adjust that slightly.
It’s a reminder to stop avoiding the hard shit. The big, hairy tasks that have been sitting on your to-do list forever. To open those letters, and deal with it face-on. To get the heck out of that relationship that is pulling you down and you know it. In business and life, you’ve got to look truth right in the eyes and address it. The longer you wait, the worse it will become.
Simple stuff, but we forget. It’s just part of being human I suppose.
Good luck out there!
Adam
